Parenting Scenarios :

Unacceptable Behaviors

Smoking is totally unacceptable to you and your spouse. You have had some general conversations with your teenage son about smoking, drugs, and other risky behaviors.

Try This

1
You smelled smoke on your son’s clothes, but he told you it was from being in a car with friends who were smoking. Then you found matches in the pocket of your son’s jeans. You don’t want to have an argument with him about this, but you want to make sure he isn’t smoking. Use the spaces below to answer the following questions:
  1. What arguments might your son use to sidetrack you from this issue?
  2. What could you do or say to keep the conversation focused on his behavior?
  3. If your son has started smoking, what could you do next that would be effective now that prevention is no longer possible?
  4. What should you avoid doing?
