Many States Want Your Business

Although economic growth is an objective of most businesses, it is a goal held by many states and communities as well. When businesses or people move into a state or community, there is more economic activity. This creates jobs that allow residents to earn income and therefore pay taxes that support government programs. For these reasons, many states have undertaken advertising programs that are designed to attract both businesses and people to them.

  1. Investigate Begin the activity by finding business magazines that include advertisements for states. These advertisements may encourage businesses to locate in a particular state, tourists to visit the state, or older people to retire in the state. Also search for information about the condition of the economy in the states you identify.
  2. Summarize Write a summary of how each advertisement is designed to attract people or businesses to the state that has placed the ad. Include a general description of conditions in each state's economy.
  3. Assess Explain how these advertisements are intended to affect each state's economic conditions. Do you think that the ads will achieve their purpose? Explain the logic behind your assessment.
