Chapter 30: Product Planning

A Matter of Ethics Online Action

What Is Legal and What Is Ethical
In 1997, a settlement was reached that brought an end to the countless class-action lawsuits being filed across the country against the tobacco industry. As part of the settlement, tobacco companies agreed to pay almost $250 billion over the course of the next 25 years. The money was to be used to pay for the health-care costs states incurred as a result of the failing health of smokers.

Activity
Given that tobacco is a legal product in the United States, and that only adults are allowed to purchase it, how do you feel about the tobacco settlement? Is it right for businesses that manufacture and sell a legal product to be held responsible for the damaging consequences of its use?
