Develop References

References are people who know your character, intelligence, work ethic, and skills and who are willing to provide you with a good recommendation to a potential employer or school. You may wish to create two lists of references—one list of teachers, advisors, and coaches for use in applying to postsecondary education and another list of volunteer and work supervisors for use in finding employment. The better each person knows and respects you, the more solid the reference you will receive. Before adding these lists to your portfolio, contact each person and ask whether he or she would feel comfortable serving as a reference.

Keep in contact with your references and note any changes in their contact information. More recent references are always best, so update your reference list as you gain experience.
