Review Key Concepts

  1. Lifelong learning enhances existing skills and develops new ones. It therefore helps you excel at your current job and get raises and promotions. Having top-notch skills also makes it easier to find a new job if you move or are laid off.
  2. Students should mention three of the following: experience on the job (seniority), knowledge and competence, willingness to learn, initiative/ambition, perseverance, cooperativeness/interpersonal skills, thinking skills, adaptability and appropriate education.
  3. Pros of accepting a promotion include higher salary, new challenges and responsibilities, and the chance to build new skills and make more decisions. Cons include changed relationships with coworkers, possible longer hours or increase workload, and leadership tasks that may be stressful at first, such as evaluating others' work.
