You should consider your interests and skills when planning your career. A job is work that people do for pay, an occupation is the type of work you do, and a career is a series of related jobs built on a person’s interests, knowledge, training, and experience. Your lifestyle is the way you use your time, energy, and resources. Your work affects your lifestyle. Some important reasons people work are to earn money, to fulfill wants and needs, to be around other people, to contribute to society, and for self-fulfillment.

Section 1.2 Summary
The global economy refers to the ways in which the world’s economies are linked. It affects what kinds of jobs will be available. You will need basic skills, thinking skills, personal qualities, and adaptability to meet the demands of the global job market. Other workplace trends include the use of technology, diversity, the use of teams, outsourcing, and telecommuting. Most of the new jobs predicted for the near future will be in the service-producing industries. When looking for careers, you need to be aware of economic, technological, and workplace trends, job outlook, and personal job satisfaction.
