Music! Its Role and Importance in Our Lives

Chapter 5: Rhythms that Dance

From the Top

Name: Susie Kim
Age: 15
Instrument: Violin
Hometown: Naperville, IL

Susie Kim on performing Banjo and Fiddle on the From the Top radio show:

Q: What are your thoughts and feelings about this piece?

A: My favorite part is, undoubtedly, the pizzicato opening to the piece, because it is such a fun way to introduce the music. My least favorite part is the pizzicato section near the end of the piece, because by the time I have reached that part, my fingers have begun to smart. I hope, when I play, the audience doesn't see any facial expression reflecting how much I am in pain by the end of the piece!

Q: What is unique or special about this piece of music?

A: Most pieces that I have played are either extremely lyrical, or extremely difficult (technically). This piece stands out from all the other pieces in my repertoire because the different passages are simply imitations of banjoes and fiddles.

Q: What was it like preparing for and performing on From the Top?

A:From the Top was actually the first live radio program I ever performed on. I had listened to From the Top ever since I was 11, so I was pretty nervous on the plane trip to Albuquerque. Once I met Chris O'Riley and all the producers and FTT staff, though, I knew that I would have a great time there. It was so exciting to meet other performers my age too! I really enjoyed the experience.
