of the United Kingdom (U.K.) of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Situated in the central
and southern two-thirds of the island of Great Britain, England features rolling hills and
mountains, and flat, low-lying marshlands. London is its largest city as well as its
capital city. The country is bordered to the north by Scotland and to the west by Wales.
Its location is approximately 24 miles by sea from France. England's climate is temperate,
rarely falling below 23 degrees Fahrenheit or above 86 degrees Fahrenheit, and rainfall is
plentiful. History Throughout its early history, Great Britain was subjected to invasions,
including Julius Caesar's first invasion in 55 BC, and the main Roman invasion in 43 AD.
Germanic tribes settled into the territory during the 5th and 6th
centuries, a time of plague, power struggles, and Saxon invasion. The history of
Anglo-Saxon England covers early medieval times from the end of Roman rule and the
establishment of Anglo-Saxon kingdoms until the Conquest by the Normans in 1066. Dominant
themes during that time were the spread of Christianity and political unification of the
region. What for centuries was known as the Kingdom of England became the country of
England during the 10th century. The country has been marked by numerous wars and
conflicts, including the Battle of Hastings, and the English Civil War. Culture and People With a population of about 51 million people, England accounts
for more than 83 percent of the total population of the U.K. The country ranks as one of
the most influential and far-reaching centers of cultural development on the planet. Its
vast culture encompasses old and new. Historic events and sites, artifacts, and
environments are revered, as is its royal family the Windsors. Throughout history, the
English people have contributed greatly to the development of the arts and sciences. Click to hear the music of England. http://worldmusic.nationalgeographic.com/worldmusic/view/page.ba
