North Carolina Science Grade 6

Unit 6: Energy and Waves

Nonconformist Materials

Project Type: Technology
Working with a partner, research the expansion and contraction of nonconformist compounds. Using a computer, develop a data base of materials, how they react in extreme temperature conditions, and possible uses for these new materials.

Introduction:
Most compounds expand when they are heated. This can be a problem when something such as a space instrument must take readings in extreme environments. Nonconformist materials behave differently than traditional materials. They contract when they are heated. This characteristic makes them useful for building components such as computer chips, space technology, and medical instruments.

Time:
2 class periods; one to research and one to develop the database.
