North Carolina Science Grade 6

Unit 6: Energy and Waves

Nonconformist Materials

Project Type: Technology
Working with a partner, have students research the expansion and contraction of nonconformist compounds. Have students develop a data base of materials, how they react in extreme temperature conditions, and possible uses for these new materials.

Introduction:
Most compounds expand when they are heated. This can be a problem when something such as a space instrument must take readings in extreme environments. Nonconformist materials behave differently than traditional materials. They contract when they are heated. This characteristic makes them useful for building components such as computer chips, space technology, and medical instruments.

Task:
Divide the class into pairs of students or small groups. Have students use the resources listed below to research nonconformist materials and their possible uses. Once their research is complete they should create a database using a computer program. The database should include information about how each material reacts in extreme temperatures and possible uses for each material. You may want each pair of students to put add their information into a class database that can be shared among all students.

Time:
2 class periods; one to research and one to develop the database.
