Succeeding in the World of Work

Chapter 25: Balancing Work and Personal Life

Personal Academic and Career Portfolio Help

Planning Your Career—and Beyond

Use the "Life Goals and Balance" section of your Personal Academic and Career Portfolio to think about how you will merge your personal and professional goals. Revisit the lifestyle goals you developed in Chapter 2, changing them if necessary. Include activities and goals you would like to have outside of work, as well as specific activities you would like to do in your community. For example, would you like to participate in volunteer work or faith-based activities? What role would you like friends and family to play in your life? What leisure and recreational activities will help you maintain a work-life balance? Will you vote in every election?

Your Personal Academic and Career Portfolio will always be a work in progress. As your circumstances change, your desired lifestyle also may change. From time to time, reread and fine-tune your life goals. Did you get the education or training you need? Are you working in your desired career? If not, what do you need to do to work in that career? Are you in the home you want? How are you involved in your community? How has your desired lifestyle changed? Continuing this process of reflection and goal setting will help you meet all your important goals.
