Chapter 22: Understanding Insurance

Create an Insurance Checklist

When creating your insurance checklist, remember that insurance policies vary from company to company. Most insurance companies give you the option to pay more for more coverage, or pay less for less coverage. Shop around for quotes and coverage limits from various insurers. Visit their Web sites or call their customer service departments to get accurate information.

To decide whether you need insurance on property, such as your car or belongings, determine how hard it will be for you to replace it if it is lost or stolen. (Remember that your state may require you to have liability insurance on your car, in addition to any collision and comprehensive coverage you choose.) Almost everyone needs health and disability insurance, but plans and costs vary widely—do research to find out what plan best fits your needs. When you are starting out in your career, you may not yet need life insurance; use the guidelines on page 495 to help you decide.

As your financial situation and life circumstances change, update your insurance checklist.
