Chile

The Republic of Chile is located in South America between the Andes Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. Peru is to the north and Argentina is to the east. Before the Spanish arrived in the 16th century, northern Chile was under Inca rule, and central and southern Chile was inhabited by the Araucanian Indians. Chile achieved independence in 1818. The government of Chile has provided strong economic policies that have helped Chile become a regional and international leader and a democratic nation.

Chile's Congress consists of a Senate with 38 members and a Chamber of Deputies with 120 members. Its judiciary includes a court of appeals, a military system of courts, a constitutional tribunal, and a Supreme Court. The legal system is similar to that of the United States.

Many of Chile's plants and animals are found nowhere else on earth. The Andean Condor, one of the largest flying birds, has an 11-foot wing span. This bird can be found in the open grasslands and high altitude areas of Chile.
