Directions
Read the information below and apply what you learn to answer the questions. Key your answers into the spaces provided.

Choose three schools or educational institutions that you find interesting. Create a table that lists the names, cities, and states, and one reason you would want to attend each of these institutions.

After You Graduate Are you interested in continuing your education after you graduate from high school? If so, where would you like to attend? Are you interested in going to a college or university or would you prefer to learn a particular skill in a technical or vocational school?

Junior College Ajunior college is an educational institution that offers a two-year course that is generally the equivalent of the first two years of a four-year undergraduate course.

Many people choose a junior college to start off their post-secondary education for two reasons—to reduce their expenses and allow more time to decide what field in which they would like to specialize. There are a number of excellent, reputable junior colleges that provide outstanding courses and preparation to transfer to a four-year university all around the country. You can also earn a two-year associate degree at junior college.

Four-Year University Beyond a junior college, a four-year university provides higher learning potential with teaching and research facilities. Whether private or state-subsidized (partially funded), universities offer undergraduate divisions that award bachelor’s degrees. For further study they provide graduate and professional schools that award master’s degrees and doctorates.

Students have the option of starting out at a four-year university, or transferring from a junior college in order to complete their education.

Vocational Training As opposed to offering a broad spectrum of academic education, a vocational school focuses more on a teaching a specific skill or trade set. Vocational schools are often referred to as technical or professionalschools.

Students enter vocational training, often on a secondary level, to receive instruction and practical introductory experience in a specific skill or trade—such as business, mechanics, carpentry, construction, photography, animation, and so on.

Find Information on a Web Site With your teacher’s permission, use the Internet to seek out information on several junior colleges, four-year universities, and vocational training schools that might interest you. Two excellent Web site resources include www.collegeview.com and www.gocollege.com.

In addition, use a search engine to find Internet sites with information about post-secondary educational options in your city or state. Here are some keywords you might use: <your city or state> and junior college, university, vocational training.
