The Environment Occupying most of northern North America, Canada is the second largest country in the world in size. Its borders extend from the Atlantic Ocean on the east to the Pacific Ocean on the west, and northward, reaches the Arctic Ocean. Canada shares its southern border with the United States. This country features many gorgeous cities, from its capital of Ottawa, to its largest, Toronto. One of its claims to fame is that it has the most lakes of any country on the globe. Horseshoe Falls in Ontario (part of Niagara Falls) is one of the world's greatest waterfalls, generating hydroelectric power. From the broad, flat Canadian Prairies, to the Rocky Mountains, to Nova Scotia, this land is vast and diverse, beautiful and inspiring.

History First inhabited by Aboriginal peoples, Canada was founded as a union of British and former French colonies. It gained independence from the United Kingdom during an incremental process that began in 1867 and ended in 1982 with the Canada Act. The Head of State, Queen Elizabeth II, is also the Queen of England, and its government is a federal constitutional democracy monarchy with a parliamentary democracy. Canada is divided into ten provinces and three territories.

Culture and People Canada is a multicultural and bilingual country. Both English and French are spoken throughout the land. It is a technologically advanced and industrialized nation with a diversified economy that relies heavily on trade, particularly with the United States. Due to immigration, the country's population is on the rise—current estimates suggest more than 32.6 million people. Canada's official national sports are hockey and lacrosse, and its national symbol, the maple leaf, dates back to the 18th century.
