Entering the World of Work

Chapter 12: Being a Valuable Employee

Smart Tips

Real-World Connection
Unions are organizations of wage earners that work to gain benefits for the members. Some of those benefits include increased wages, working hours, and working conditions. Some unions have apprenticeship programs. Some do not. Use the following steps to search the Internet to learn about apprenticeships in unions that are in careers that interest you.

  1. Use key words “labor union” to search the Internet.
  2. Select one of the unions, such as autoworkers.
  3. Type “apprenticeship” in the search box.
  4. Read any information that applies to apprenticeship.
  5. In your summary, include the following information:
    • The type of apprenticeship.
    • The length of apprenticeship.
    • The types of things the apprentice learns.
    • With whom the apprentice will be working.
    • What type of certificate the apprentice will earn at the end of the apprenticeship.
    • Information on how to apply for the program.
    • Who is eligible for the apprenticeship.

Point of View
Notes about the customer service you receive might look like this:

  • The waitress at Denny's was friendly and helpful.
  • The sales clerk at the Gap helped me find the right scarf to go with a new shirt.
  • The cashier at the discount store was really kind and patient.
  • The packer at the grocery store was really friendly.
  • The sales person at the department store helped me even though it was time for her to quit for the night.
Use this summary as a model for your summary.
I observed good customer service this week. What I learned is that good customer service is being friendly and helpful to customers. It is also doing a little extra and having a good attitude. It is putting the customer first.

Making Good Choices
Think about what type of a person Bryan is. Does he sound like someone you could trust as a friend? Bryan is not being honest. He is not demonstrating good character. He is being dishonest. He is not a good employee, and would probably not make a very good friend. Bryan will most likely be fired if his supervisor finds out he has been untruthful on his timesheet.
Think about Bryan's options. He can quit his job and start fresh with a new company where he tells the truth. He can go to his supervisor and discuss the situation with her and promise to be on time in the future. Perhaps Bryan's supervisor will give Bryan another chance if his other work has been good.
