Entering the World of Work

Section 1: Why Work Matters

Math Practice Step-by-Step

Follow these steps to solve the Section 1.1 Math Practice problem.

Figuring Hours Worked
Figure It Out  Today you arrive at work at 8:30 a.m. You take lunch from 12:30 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Then you worked from 1:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. How many hours and minutes have you worked?

Step 1  Calculate how long you worked before lunch. Subtract the earlier time (the time you got to work) from the later time (The time you left for lunch).

Step 2  Calculate the time you worked after lunch. Subtract the earlier time (the time you returned from lunch) from the later time (the time you left work).

Step 3  Add the two times together. This gives you the answer to the question.
