"King Phillip's War"

Introduction
In this chapter students learned about the settlement of early colonial America by the English.

Lesson Description
Students will learn about the events leading to King Philip's War as well as the affects of the war. After answering several questions, they will use the material they learn to identify a developing pattern of hostility and conflict between settlers and Native Americans.

Instructional Objectives

  1. The student will be able to identify the causes of King Philip's War.
  2. The student will be able to identify the results of King Philip's War.
  3. The student will be able to use the information they learn to understand the development of a pattern in relations between settlers and Native Americans.

Student Web Activity Answers

  1. King Philip's War was the result of colonists' desire to claim more land, the deaths of those who had managed to form a peaceful relationship, and tension resulting from differences in customs and land use.
  2. The colonists referred to Metacom, brother of Wampanoag leader Wamsutta, as Philip.
  3. Some Native Americans were converted to Christianity by the English and did not support the Native American side.
  4. King Philip's War resulted in a large loss of life on both the English and Native American sides. The traditional way of life for Native Americans was also beginning to change as many were forced into slavery or servitude.
  5. King Philip's War was the beginning of many wars to come in which Native Americans would be forced from their lands.
