Teen Health Course 3

Chapter 12: Alcohol

Parent Letters - English

Parent Letter and Activities
For use with Chapter 12

Dear Parent or Guardian,

We are now studying the topic of alcohol. Specifically, we are examining how alcohol affects the human body—teens, in particular—and how alcoholism develops. We will conclude by emphasizing the benefits of being alcohol free. Some questions your teen will consider as we discuss this topic are What are the effects of alcohol on the body? What problems does alcohol cause when teens use it? What are the dangers of drinking? What are sources of help for alcohol addiction? What are reasons to avoid alcohol use? What are some fun and relaxing alternatives to using alcohol for recreation?

These questions touch on serious medical and social issues. As your teen answers them, he or she will develop a thorough understanding of the risks of alcohol use and the benefits of being alcohol free. Our course will help students to resist peer pressure and focus on activities that do not involve alcohol use.

To support and extend our classroom work, please set aside some time during the next few weeks to complete one or more of the following activities with your teen:

  • Look at ads in magazines and work with your teen to identify different messages sent by the alcohol industry that encourage people to buy and use its products.
  • Be available to answer questions and concerns your teen may have about alcohol use.
  • Discuss with your teen the effects of alcohol on coordination. How does drinking affect someone’s ability to ride a bike, for example, or participate in sports?

Of course, feel free to engage in other activities you think will help your teen to choose to be alcohol free. Your input will be a welcome addition to our efforts here. As always, do not hesitate to contact me for further information.

Sincerely,

Health Teacher
