Chapter 14: Health, Disability, and Life Insurance

S&P's Financial Focus

Health Insurance

Eating right and exercising regularly will go a long way toward keeping you in good health. However, even people who take good care of themselves may still require time at the doctor’s office or a hospital stay.

Quiz Yourself To help you know what health-care plan is best for you, ask yourself the following questions:

  • For whom do you need coverage-just yourself or your whole family?
  • Do you have any chronic illnesses such as diabetes?
  • Are you physically challenged or have any physical or mental disabilities?
  • What is your family’s health history? Is there a history of a certain illness such as cancer or heart disease that could require medical attention later in your life?
  • Are you planning on starting a family in the near future?
  • Do you engage in dangerous activities, such as motorcycle riding?
  • How much can you afford to pay for insurance?
  • How much can you afford to cover in case of a hospital stay?
  • Can you afford to pay for preventive care and routine check-ups?
  • Do you want to chose your own doctors, or are you okay with the doctors in a health plan?
  • Are your doctors in the health plan?
