Energy for Activity

How much energy is used during different kinds of exercise? Exercise involves the expenditure of energy. The energy can be generated either through aerobic or anaerobic cellular respiration. In either case energy stored in the chemical bond of biological molecules is transferred to the molecule Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) by adding an additional phosphate molecule to Adenosine Diphosphate (ADP). Muscle contractions are powered by the conversion of ATP back to ADP and phosphate. Exercise that involves more intense muscle contractions or muscle contractions over a longer period of time uses more energy than brief or less intense exercise.
