Getting the Most from Competitive Events

One of the primary benefits of competitive events is their relevance to life beyond the classroom. The experience can lead to great opportunities in the workplace. Not only will you gain ample practice with honing your technical skills, but you will also develop traits that are attractive to employers, such as:

  • leadership and teamwork skills
  • self-confidence and self-esteem
  • stress management skills
  • time-management abilities
  • problem-solving skills
  • flexibility

Training for competitive events is also filled with opportunities to learn core curricular concepts through real-world applications of math, language, social studies, and science skills. The application process is a great time to build writing and critical-thinking skills. Competitions often require personal essays with their applications.

Make Community Connections

You can find countless resources beyond the classroom to help you prepare for competitive events. Keep your parents and other trusted adults apprised of upcoming events and let them know that you welcome their support. Work with your teachers to locate people in the community who will provide feedback and advice. Many organizations that sponsor competitive events offer mentoring programs. Local job fairs are also great opportunities to form industry connections that could help you not only with competition, but with employment after graduation.
