Understanding Concrete

Introduction
Design trends in construction come and go, just like in music and fashion. This is especially noticeable in residential construction, as homeowners' tastes change frequently. Technological innovations in construction materials help drive these changing styles. For example, there are many new finishes and colors of concrete available, which means concrete is being used in new places inside and around the home. This WebQuest will illustrate how construction technology and trends are linked. It will also get you up to speed on the latest in concrete trends.

The Task
You have been hired as a summer intern for a busy concrete contracting company in your area. The internship is a temporary position that gives you practical, on-the-job training. It is an ideal way for you to gain industry experience while still in school. The internship will also give you a head start in finding a job after graduation, since many companies hire their former interns. Your first assignment is to create an informational campaign on trends in concrete. This campaign is aimed at people who plan to renovate their homes, and it will let them know about concrete's many advantages and looks. Your campaign should include the following information

  • an overview of the latest technologies in concrete;
  • new ways concrete is used in residential construction;
  • stylish new looks for concrete;
  • concrete design ideas;
  • advantages to using concrete for home renovations.

The Process
To write a compelling campaign, you will need to complete the following steps.

  • Research the latest in concrete fabrication and use. You can start by viewing the following websites.
  • American Concrete Institute
    Concrete Ideas
    Concrete Network
    HGTVPro.com
    Portland Cement Association
    While you read, take notes.
  • Summarize how concrete is being used in new ways inside and outside the house. Include at least three specific examples.
  • Create a visual presentation, such PowerPoint slides, a poster, or a brochure. The goal of the presentation is to inspire and inform homeowners about the various uses of concrete.

Guidance
Here are some suggestions to make your campaign stronger.

  1. Look through trade magazines or home renovation publications for images to motivate your audience.
  2. Include a resources section, where readers can find Web site addresses and phone numbers for more information or help.
  3. Homeowners want their renovations to be attractive. They also care about the quality and durability of the work. Include information on the advantages of concrete use.
Conclusions
  • Look for innovative uses of concrete in your neighborhood.
  • If you know anyone who has recently completed a home renovation, ask them about the challenges. Find out how they made decisions about what building materials to use.
  • Once you have completed your campaign materials, present them to your classmates.
  • Turn in your research notes, summary, and visual presentation to your teacher.
