Introduction To Physical Science

Unit 6: Waves, Sound, and Light

Light show

Introduction:

Light is a form of electromagnetic energy and has wavelengths that are visible to the human eye. Although we perceive sunlight as colorless, it actually contains all the colors of the spectrum.

Task:

Have students work with partners to learn how light works and how we see color. They should find out where natural light shows occur on Earth. Have the student pairs visit web sites on light experiments and select one to conduct. Ask them to demonstrate the experiment for the class and explain the principle at work.

Time:

1 class period for research and supply gathering, additional class time for experimentation and demonstrations

Alternative:

Invite a class of younger students to view the students' demonstrations. Provide extra materials for the experiments and allow the guests to try them if time permits.
