Objective-
To introduce students to the cuisine of
the Spanish-speaking world
-
To familiarize students with the metric
system
Notes -
You may wish to brainstorm with students keywords in Spanish that will help direct them to Spanish-language Web sites to complete this WebQuest.
- When
dealing with food vocabulary, students
are likely to find terms that they are
not familiar with. Tell them that the
names of certain foods, especially fruits
and vegetables, vary greatly from country
to country. For example, an avocado
is un aguacate in Mexico but una
palta in Chile. The word for hot
pepper is el chile in Mexico
and el ají in many South
American countries.
-
Once the students have selected their
recipes, have them print
them out. They can use the printed
recipes to prepare an oral step-by-step
presentation to the class on how to make
the dishes they have chosen.
-
Encourage students to use their dictionaries
to look up unfamiliar words.
Expansion
-
Have students prepare a three-course meal
using the recipes they downloaded from
the Internet. Divide the class into three
groups and assign a course to each group.
Have students pool their recipes and choose
the best one for their course. Ask each
group to translate the instructions for
its recipe, prepare the dish at home,
and bring it in to share with the class
or with other Spanish classes.
-
If there is a Spanish market in your community,
organize a field trip with your class
to shop for the ingredients for the recipes.
