"Religious Organizations"

Introduction
In this chapter, students learned about the sociological meaning and functions of religion. In Western societies most people practice religion through some organizational structure, which is why the nature of religious organizations is an important component of the sociological study of religion. In this activity students will take a closer look at the challenges and trends in religious organizations.

Lesson Description
Students will visit the Hartford Institute for Religious Research Web site to learn more about the reasons for the sociological study of religion. They will also examine different congregations and current issues in religious organizations. After answering several questions, students will choose a religious congregation to learn more about and will present a short speech to the class.

Instructional Objectives

  1. Students will be able to explain the purposes for the sociological study of religion.
  2. Students will be able to analyze current trends in religious congregations.
