Taiwan

Taiwan is located in East Asia off the coast of the People's Republic of China, south of Japan, and north of the Philippines. To the east is the Pacific Ocean, to the south is the South China Sea, to the west is the Taiwan Strait, and to the north is the East China Sea. Taiwan is a beautiful island shaped like a sweet potato, and the Taiwanese people sometimes call themselves "children of the Sweet Potato." The geography of the island consists of steep mountains and tropical and subtropical vegetation. Evidence of human settlement in Taiwan dates back 30,000 years.

Taiwan's government is considered to be a multiparty democracy. The chief of state is the president, who is elected, along with a vice president, by popular vote. The head of the government is the premier, who is appointed by the president. The Legislative Yuan consists of 225 seats. The legal system is based on a civil law system. Justices are appointed by the president to the Judicial Yuan.
