For use with Chapter 1

Dear Parent or Guardian,
Your student’s health class is currently studying health and wellness. The topics include total health, skills for building health, factors that affect health, and health risks and behavior.

Questions your teen will consider include: What are the three parts of good health? What is the health triangle? What is the mind-body connection? What are the skills for building health? What is risk behavior? How can I avoid or reduce risk behavior? How does abstinence benefit all sides of the health triangle? With your help, your student will explore these topics with confidence and find answers that will provide information for making healthful choices. Your participation in the exploration of this material is vital.

To support and extend our classroom work, please set aside some time during the next few weeks to complete one or more of the following activities with your teen.

  • Brainstorm the traits your teen has inherited that could affect his health decisions.
  • Make a list of any physical or social environmental factors that could be changed, and that have an influence on the health of your family.
  • Look through magazines with your teen and identify advertisements that deal with health behaviors.

Please engage in other activities that you feel will help your teen understand health and wellness. Learning ways to practice the health skills will help your teen to make responsible choices for a healthy life. Thank you very much for your attention. As always, please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,

Health Teacher
