  • Natureserve
This is an interesting biodiversity database. The home page map makes it appear to be limited to the eastern U.S. but it actually covers much of the U.S. One can search for a particular species, or part of a name, and retrieve all sorts of data. Seems to be a good starting point for research projects and student papers.

At this site you can peruse various years of the Federal Register for species listings with references to endangered species and get very current information on species status.
