Web Link Description

Students will learn about the importance of keeping the water supply in their community clean at What Is Groundwater? This informative six-page Web site defines groundwater and explains its sources, storage, and importance. The site also offers a groundwater science project and information about how to protect this valuable resource. Invite students to explore the interesting, animated presentation of this Web site, created by the Groundwater Foundation in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Before Online Activity

Ask students if they know what groundwater is. Tell them that groundwater is water that flows and is stored beneath the ground. Next ask students if they know how groundwater becomes polluted. Then ask why it is important to keep groundwater clean.(A good part of it is the source of well water.) If you are using Macmillan/McGraw-Hill Health & Wellness, have students review the sections on water pollution. Then invite students to visit What Is Groundwater?, a Web site where they can learn more about protecting the safety of groundwater. Arrange students into pairs for this activity.

Have drawing paper, markers, rulers, scissors, tape, glue, modeling clay, and markers or crayons available for students to use in completing this activity. You might also provide assorted empty boxes and craft materials for students to use in creating their displays.
