'Active-learning' can broadly be described as strategies and techniques in which students are engaged in their own learning, and is typically characterized by the utilization of 'higher order' critical thinking skills. The use of these techniques is critical to biological education because of their powerful impact on students' learning and development of scientific professional skills.
