Teen Health Course 3

Chapter 8: Violence Prevention

Parent Letters - English

Parent Letter and Activities
For use with Chapter 8

Dear Parent or Guardian,

We are now studying the topics of avoiding and preventing violence and abuse. We will discuss the influences that contribute to the fact that violence among teens is on the rise. We will also discuss ways to avoid and prevent violence—everything from harassment to homicide—in the home, at school, and in the community. We will complete this chapter by discussing abuse—the physical, emotional, or mental mistreatment of another person—and its effects. We will identify ways to get help for abuse.

Some questions your teen will consider as we discuss this topic are: What are the causes of violence in our society? What can be done to avoid being a victim of violence? What is abuse and why does it happen? What can be done to prevent and stop abuse?

The topics covered in our current study and these questions touch on serious social issues. Your teen will learn valuable safety skills that can reduce his or her chances of being a victim of violence or abuse.

To support and extend our classroom work, please set aside some time during the next few weeks to complete one or more of the following activities with your teen:

  • Watch the news on TV together. Discuss the possible causes of any violent stories you see. Discuss ways that violence can be avoided or prevented.
  • Role-play with your teen on ways to avoid and prevent abuse and violence. Take turns being the parent and the child as you role-play.
  • Be available to answer questions and concerns your teen may have about abuse and violence.

Of course, feel free to engage in other activities you think will help your teen avoid violence and abuse. Your activities will be a welcome addition to our efforts here. As always, do not hesitate to contact me for further information.

Sincerely,

Health Teacher
