Chapter 20: Safety and Emergencies

Parent Letters - English

Parent Letter and Activities
For use with Chapter 20

Dear Parent or Guardian,

We are currently studying the topics of safety, emergencies, and first aid in your teen’s health class. Specifically, we are identifying ways to be safe at home and school, on the road and in the outdoors, and during extreme weather emergencies. We will also be learning the basic principles of first aid, such as how to help a person with a sprain, burn, or sting. Your teen will also learn how to react in the event that someone begins to choke or stops breathing.

Some questions your teen will consider as we discuss this topic are Why do accidents happen? How can I stay safe in the event of severe weather? How can I be prepared for emergencies? What are first-aid treatments for common emergencies. To support and extend our classroom work, please set aside some time during the next few weeks to complete one or more of the following activities with your teen:

  • Assign your teen the job of checking smoke alarms in your home, making sure they are properly placed and functioning.
  • Play “What would you do if . . .?” Ask your teen what he or she would do in the event of a tornado approaching, for instance. Help your child to prepare various plans of action depending on whether they are inside or outside, etc.
  • Conduct a home safety survey together. Be available to answer questions and concerns your teen may have about safety hazards in or around your home.

Of course, feel free to engage in other activities you think will help your teen to be more safety conscious and better prepared in the event of an emergency that requires first aid. Your support and your activities will be a welcome addition to our efforts here. As always, do not hesitate to contact me for further information.

Sincerely,

Health Teacher
