Teen Health Course 3

Chapter 18: Communicable Diseases

Parent Letters - English

Parent Letter and Activities
For use with Chapter 18

Dear Parent or Guardian,

In health class, we are now studying communicable diseases—those that can be passed to a person from another person, animal or object. We are learning about the characteristics of some common communicable diseases, such as colds and influenza. We will conclude by studying sexually transmitted infections and HIV/AIDS.

Some questions your teen will consider as we discuss this topic are: How do diseases spread? What are the body’s defenses against pathogens? Which good health habits can protect a person from disease? Why is abstinence the best way to avoid getting a sexually transmitted infection? How can I avoid getting HIV?

These questions, the last two in particular, touch on serious medical and social issues. As your teen answers them, he or she will learn why choosing abstinence from sexual activity is one of the most important health decisions a person can make. Our goal is to encourage young people to choose abstinence and feel secure in their decision.

To support and extend our classroom work, please set aside some time during the next few weeks to complete one or more of the following activities with your teen:

  • Be available to answer questions and concerns your teen may have about sexually transmitted infections and HIV/AIDS.
  • Together, develop a checklist of home health supplies that should be on hand, and shop together for those items.

Of course, feel free to engage in other activities you think will help your teen to develop a greater understanding of the truism that “an ounce of prevention” is the best insurance against communicable diseases. Your input will be a welcome addition to our efforts here. As always, do not hesitate to contact me for further information.

Sincerely,

Health Teacher
