Teen Health Course 3

Chapter 14: Drugs

Parent Letters - English

Parent Letter and Activities
For use with Chapter 14

Dear Parent or Guardian,

We are now studying the topic of drugs. Specifically, we are examining how drug abuse affects the body and mind and how addiction develops. We will conclude by emphasizing the benefits of being drug free. Our emphasis will be on avoiding misuse and abuse of legal and illegal drugs.

Some questions your teen will consider as we discuss this topic are What are the effects of various drugs on the body? What social, physical and mental problems do drugs cause when teens use them? What are sources of help for drug addiction?

These questions touch on serious medical and social issues. As your teen answers them, he or she will develop a thorough understanding of the risks of drug abuse and the benefits of being drug free. Our course will help students to resist negative peer pressure and focus on activities that do not involve drugs.

To support and extend our classroom work, please set aside some time during the next few weeks to complete one or more of the following activities with your teen:

  • Role play to help your teen strengthen his or her refusal skills in anticipation of a peer trying to persuade them to smoke marijuana.
  • Be available to answer questions and concerns your teen may have about drug use.
  • Volunteer together to take part in a community drug-awareness activity.

Feel free to engage in other activities you think will help your teen to act responsibly when it comes to drug use. Your input will be a welcome addition to our efforts here. As always, do not hesitate to contact me for further information.

Sincerely,

Health Teacher
