Chapter 19: Understanding Technical Aspects of Photography

Introduction
In Chapter 19 students have reviewed the technical aspects of photography. In this activity students will complete a crossword puzzle, using words and concepts from the unit.

Lesson Description
Students will review the unit on technical aspects of photography by completing a crossword puzzle. For directions, they can press the Instructions button in the lower-left corner. If they need a hint, they can press the Word List button. After finishing the puzzle, they can press the Check button to see how well they performed.

lens: the part of the camera through which the light enters, is sharpened, and then is transmitted to the film (or solar cell)
shutter: a device that slides back and forth (or up and down) to control the amount of time the film or solar cell is exposed to light
aperture: the lens opening that controls how much light gets through the shutter
f-stop: a scale that indicates the lens opening in numbers
shutter speed: indicates how fast the shutter opens and closes, measured in fractions of a second
ISO: a standard measure of the speed of film
back lighting: having the light sources behind the subject instead of behind the photographer
bracketing: a method by which a photographer shoots one picture at the perceived correct exposure, then overexposes one picture and underexposes another
flash-synch speed: the fastest shutter speed that can be used with a flash to obtain a properly exposed picture
contact sheet: positive images printed negative size on one piece of photo paper
duotone: a photograph printed in two colors
enlarger: a device used to shine light through a negative, magnifying the image onto light-sensitive paper
fixer: a bath that sets a film or print image permanently
image editing: changing, adjusting, or cleaning up of photographs by means of certain computer programs
