Discussion Questions


1			Offer some conjectures as to why science fiction and fantasy can so effectively exploit the dramatic conflict between what the reader suspects is occurring in a story and what s/he later discovers to be true.




2			Using a Venn diagram, a graphic organizer, a concept map, or a thought-cluster/web demonstrate the relationship between visualizing and making inferences, and show how these two critical thinking skills contribute to the reading skills of connecting and questioning.




3			Address this statement, arguing either for or against its basic premises: "Reading is a dying art. Movies and television are more entertaining, more engaging, and more effective learning tools than books." In your response, consider learning attributes such as visualization, inference, lexicon learning, prediction, ownership, analysis, research, and language acquisition.
