Discussion Questions


1			Discuss Wallace's perspective on the relationship between Canon and contemporary young adult literature as it is filtered through a popular culture lens. In your discussion, include an operative definition of "popular culture", as well as provide examples for connectives of your own between canon literature and contemporary young adult literature.




2			Outline your view of "literacy" in regards to both Canon-based and contemporary young adult literature. Within your answer, provide a usable definition of literacy and describe ways in which each of these two major categories do and do not build literacy skills that young adults will need in their lives.




3			Discuss what Wallace means when she speaks of "popular culture serving as a 'grounding force'" (Wallace, in Cole, P. 559) How is Wallace using the term "grounding" and how does this relate to learning?




4			Explore the differences between adaptations and original screenplays. Within your answer, address the questions of 1) whether or not all literature is adaptation since it borrows from other ideas and 2) whether there are distinct delineations between adaptations, original scripts (screenplays and novels), and novel-tie ins. In summary, what variations, if any, occur between an adaptation of a work and a fresh approach to a work?
