Discuss what Cole refers to as "New Journalism" in terms of non-fiction. Consider how the traditional view of non-fiction differs from the range of what is now considered non-fiction. Have the rules changed?
Does non-fiction now have to be entirely truthful?
How does non-fiction now differ from fiction?
What makes up elements or mediums of the "New Journalism" family?
2
Contemporary Realistic Fiction and Creative Non-Fiction both have elements of non-fiction but differ in certain aspects. Using research and analysis, form a definition for CRF and CNF that demonstrates your understanding of the two variations on fiction and non-fiction.
3
In 2007 a writer with a well-known novel about his life in prison was accused of falsifying information. The writer responded with the argument that the work was memoir and therefore it wasn't necessary for all elements to be the exact fact. Form an argument in which you either defend the writer or uphold the allegation that work marketed as non-fiction must stay with the truth.
4
Cole clearly establishes the importance of immediacy (how does this pertain to me?) and relevancy (why or how should this issue matter to me?), demonstrating that these two elements must be present in order to engage young adults in textual ownership. How does non-fiction serve the needs of relevancy and immediacy?
5
Biographies, memoirs and diaries are most often written in the 1st person point of view, giving them a very personal narrative voice. Discuss the use of these non-fiction categories as tools in teaching narrative voice and textual structure. How do non-fiction categories help teachers to teach elements of voice and structure in fiction?
6
Cole points out that many classrooms don't employ non-fiction as a teaching tool, relying instead on fiction and creative literature. In your group, discuss the bias against non-fiction and explore existing rationales for why it is not used in classrooms. You should be able to list at least five existing conditions that discourage the use of non-fiction in the classroom. Once you have compiled your list, develop an argument that refutes the biases that you listed.
