EXERCISE

Benefits, Negotiation and Management Developed and provided by Gloria Campbell of Wartburg College.

The information contained in this exercise is meant to give students an understanding of the monetary value of benefits, the challenges of management in keeping costs reasonable, and how to approach negotiation. It would be a useful exercise to include in Chapters 13 or 14.

Below is a spreadsheet of costs for benefits for a fictional company of 100 employees. For this exercise, students are broken into teams of 2 or 3 students each, with half the teams assigned a management role and half a "union" or employee role. They are asked to negotiate the benefits and compensation, with the winning management team holding the costs to the lowest level. Likewise, the winning union team negotiates the highest overall compensation value. Management can cut employees if unions agree to that action to cover additional compensation and benefits costs.

Student teams email the instructor the result of their negotiation in the provided report, also found below, which can be posted to an intranet for students to evaluate what other teams decided. The ethical and practical implications of cutting employees can make for interesting class discussion.

Timing: the exercise usually takes about 45 min. to an hour for negotiation and a similar period to discuss the outcome.

Compensation: Consider giving some type of prize or recognition (possibly bonus points on the course curve) to serve as an incentive. That can really motivate some groups.
