This interactive map examines country membership in several different international organizations, circa 1991. Here, membership in the North Atlantic Free Trade Area (NAFTA), the Oil Producing and Exporting Countries (OPEC), the Organization of American States (OAS), the Arab League, and the European Union (EU) is shown in detail. After the end of the Cold War and the breakup of the Soviet Union, the previous balance of power between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. disintegrated. Affiliations between countries were no longer based on purely ideological issues. Trade agreements, regional shared heritages, and economic factors all contributed to the new system of alliances throughout the world.
