Students will learn about different aspects of life in the 1950s.

Instructional Objectives

  1. The student will be able to identify characteristics of American culture in the 1950s.
  2. The student will be able to identify sacrifices made by individuals in an attempt to achieve equality.

  1. Autherine was born in Shiloh, Alabama.
  2. Autherine received a BA in English from Miles College in Fairfield, Alabama. She also attended Selma University in Selma, Alabama.
  3. Autherine knew she would not be accepted to the University of Alabama because she was an African American. She contacted the NAACP to help her with the legal process that would be necessary to get her enrolled.
  4. Saddle shoes were white shoes with a saddle like covering on the sides that was commonly black. They were very popular during the 1950s.
  5. Answers will vary but may include: the addition of "under God" to the Pledge of Allegiance, gray flannel suits worn by men, anti-communist sentiment, religion.
