Smartphone Apps
A smartphone is a mobile phone that has a computer operating system, software, web access, keyboard, and messaging capabilities, which permits the user to download a variety of applications, or apps. These applications open the doors to small and large businesses alike to attract new customers, communicate with current customers, and offer special customer services. Applications are downloaded on the smartphone. Marketers that want their presence on a smartphone create an application for it. Apple is now offering marketers the ability to advertise on their phone with the iAds platform. For example, an advertisement promoting Nissan's new electric car—the Leaf—will be embedded in an application using the iAds platform. Apple's iAds platform offers video, graphics, and animation capabilities.

Innovate and Create
Ask students to share with the class the smartphone applications that they have seen or used themselves. Ask what advertisers might do to take advantage of Apple's iAds platform to reach them as potential customers. Those same advertisers may want to reach them on their smartphones.
