About the Cover

A batter swings hoping for a home run. When a bat hits a baseball, the contact can be represented two-dimensionally by a tangent to a circle. The portion of the bat that strikes the ball and the location of the tangent on the ball determine the path of the baseball. You will learn more about circles and tangents in Chapter 10.
