Overview

The library offers many resources. You can borrow books, research topics, or take out videos, DVDs, CDs, audiocassettes, and computer software. Most libraries also offer classes, reading programs, and Internet access.

You can use the library for almost all of your research needs. When researching, first identify as narrow a topic as possible. You can then use the library catalog for your search. Books are usually shelved using the Dewey decimal system. Large university libraries, however, may organize books using the Library of Congress classification system.

Periodicals are available at the library, although older copies may be available only on microfilm. Many libraries now offer their periodicals online. You can check Internet databases to find articles that match the topic of your research.

General reference works such as encyclopedias and almanacs can help you with simple questions. Internet reference sites also can provide answers to your questions and are available twenty-four hours a day. Although the Internet has the most current news and latest research advances on topics, not all of the information it provides is accurate. Be sure to verify the information on the site when using it as a source for your research.
