Overview

A usage glossary is a reference tool that you can use to avoid common problems with word choice in your writing and public speaking. For example, you may not remember the difference between the words sit and set. You can consult a usage glossary to refresh your memory to ensure that the appropriate word is being used in your writing. Also, a usage glossary will provide the preferred usage of certain words or expressions in formal writing or speaking. When you employ words properly, you communicate to your audience more effectively.

Review Writer's Choice Unit 19 (pp. 686-709) to master using common troublesome words. Add troublesome words to your personal proofreading checklist. Remember that if you are using a word processing program, your spell check function will not catch usage errors. To catch these errors, use your word processor's "Find" feature to search for any troublesome words from your checklist. Carefully review each sentence to see if you have used these words correctly.
