Introduction
Students have learned about persuasive writing. In this lesson, they will test their knowledge of definitions of key terms in a crossword puzzle.

Lesson Description
Students will match key terms from the unit with the definitions of these terms by completing a crossword puzzle.

Instructional Objectives

  1. Students will be able to recall and use key terms when discussing persuasive writing.
  2. Students will demonstrate their understanding of persuasive writing.
  3. Students will be able to solve a crossword puzzle.

persuasive writing: writing intended to influence a reader's opinion
argument: evidence that supports a point of view
claim: statement that asserts something
evidence: facts, statistics, examples, opinions, or reasons
red herrings: distractions
specific words: words that provide definite information
limiting words: words that prevent overgeneralizations
connotation: the suggested emotional meaning of a word beyond its dictionary definition
denotation: the dictionary meaning of a word
editorial: an opinion about current news or events that is expressed in writing
