Unit Activity Lesson Plans

Introduction
Students have read about descriptive writing. In this lesson, they will practice incorporating details to create colorful and convincing descriptions.

Lesson Description
Students will incorporate into the given sentences the details listed in parentheses at the end of each sentence, adding or replacing words as needed. Student revisions should be more colorful, convincing, and compelling than the originals.

  1. Throughout the day in the gravelly desert, a gecko stayed out of the sweltering heat, resting in the shade of a jutting rock.
  2. The gecko patiently waited for the sun to set and the air to cool before it foraged for food.
  3. When night fell, the hungry gecko darted from under the rock.
  4. An unsuspecting grasshopper was its first meal: the gecko saw it near a cactus, snatched it, and then swallowed it whole.
  5. The gecko didn't stay long to savor the bug; it sensed snakes nearby and scurried away.
