Unit Activity Lesson Plans

Introduction
Students have learned the basics about libraries and how to use the library as a resource for their research. In this lesson, they will read about the Dewey decimal system.

Lesson Description
Students will read an article that fully explains the classification and organization of the Dewey decimal system for books at the library.

Instructional Objectives

  1. Students will be required to demonstrate their reading comprehension skills by answering questions about their reading.
  2. Students will demonstrate their understanding of the Dewey decimal book classification system.
Student Web Activity Answers
  1. The Dewey decimal classification number and the Cutter number or book number make up the call number.
  2. The arts can be found under 700.
  3. The Cutter number contains the first letters of the author's last name and a series of numbers designated to help alphabetize the books on the stacks.
  4. A capital Z indicates a book of literary criticism of another book.
