Emotions play a major role in the development of children. The focus of the child shifts from the home to the larger world. Children must learn to control emotions in socially acceptable ways. Between the ages of seven and twelve, children develop a sense of self. Children with a sense of competence are likely to have high self-esteem and be willing to try new things. Older children's friendships become more personal. Peers become more important, but conflicts are common. As children gain more independence, they need help making moral choices.
